The Arts Quad
The Arts Quadrangle, more commonly referred to as the Arts Quad, is a section of Cornell University mainly comprised of the university's original buildings. Originally founded on slightly less than 210 acres of farmland donated by Senator Ezra Cornell, the college campus greatly expanded outward over time into the roughly 745 acres it currently occupies. It has also expanded into two separate campuses in Manhattan, New York City and Education City, Qatar as well as number of satellite facilities around the world.
The Arts Quad consists of a rectangular courtyard surrounded on all sides by university buildings. The buildings in the Quad include (in order of their construction) Morrill Hall (1866), White Hall (1868), Sibley Hall (1871), McGraw Hall (1872), Olive Tjaden Hall (1883), Lincoln Hall (1888), Uris Library and McGraw Tower (1892), Stimson Hall (1902), Goldwin Smith Hall (1906), Olin Library (1959) and the Carl A. Kroch Library (1992). A few of the buildings in the Arts Quad are said to be haunted. There is also a pair of statues with a bit of amusing folklore attached to them that sit across from each other in the courtyard.
The Statues of Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White
In the Arts Quad stand statues of Cornell University's founders, Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White. Ezra's statue stands outside between McGraw Hall and Morrill Hall to the West. Andrew's statue sits upon a chair to the East in front of Goldwin Smith Hall. The sidewalk between the statues has footprints painted upon it. Carnelian red footsteps go East to White's statue. White footprints lead to Cornell's statue to the East. Carnelian and White are the university's colors.
Legend has it that if a Cornell student ever manages to remain a virgin and graduate from the university and then walk between the two statues... the statues will be brought to life. The statues will then walk forward along the path, meet in the middle and shake hands in celebration of this remarkable feat. |
