The Amityville Horror
This house, known as the Rustman House summer estate, was used to double as the infamous 112 Ocean Avenue (see Amityville Horror House) in the 2005 remake of The Amityville Horror. Interestingly enough, it was not the first choice for the production team. Instead, the filmmakers had originally intended to build a new house on the other side of Silver Lake. However, those plans were scrapped when the land chosen to build the home suddenly flooded, leaving the filmmakers scrambling. Someone suggested that they look into this 100-year-old house, which had reportedly sat unoccupied for 40 years. The production team took a look and agreed that it was perfect for what they needed. The alteration costs came in around $60,000 to alter the structure to more closely resemble its infamous cousin. Or more appropriately cousins, since the house used in the 1979 version of the film resides in Toms River, New Jersey (see Amityville Horror Movie House (1979)).
Haunted Set?
Aside from the sudden flooding of the original property chosen to build the home, the production made the news for a few other strange occurrences. For starters, the woman behind the real story of The Amityville Horror, Kathy Lutz, suddenly died on August 17, 2004 and right at the start of the film's production, though she was not directly involved in the remake. A body of a fisherman was discovered in the lake nearby where the production was taking place, but that appeared to be accidental. In addition, on the first night of shooting in this house, security summoned the local sheriff's department because they had seen a shadow moving about and heard footsteps upstairs. When the police showed up to investigate, they found nothing. Finally, lights were constantly going out and equipment seemed to keep disappearing. Despite the odd occurrences, the filming was completed and none of the cast or crew was harmed. In an ironic twist, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was acquired as they were busy marketing the film. As result, The Amityville Horror was the last independent release from the former studio, possibly making MGM the final victim of the reported cursed set.
The House Today
As of the last report, the house was still unoccupied and waiting for its next owner. A chain-link fence surrounds the house and several hidden security devices protect the property. It would be best to assume that it is a private residence by now and that the new owners would like to have their privacy. |
