A Home Built for Ghosts
Sarah Winchester, the widow of William Winchester (the second president of Winchester Reapeating Arms Company), began construction of this odd mansion in 1884 because a medium told her there was a curse on the Winchester family. In order to avoid the wrath of spirits angered by their deaths being caused by Winchester rifles - Sarah commenced building a home for the spirits.
Architecture of the Subconscious or Floor Plans From Beyond?
Following inspirations from her dreams, features were added to the house that made no sense. Doors may open to nothing, stairs may lead straight to the ceiling, and a number of other nonsensical architechural designs can be encountered while wandering the Winchester Mansion. Sarah was told never to stop construction of the house, otherwise the spirits would kill her. So the mansion was continously under construction day and night, every day all year long. This construction continued until the day she died - 38 years after construction began.
The mansion currently stands at four stories in height. There was a point where some sections had reached seven stories, but these sections collapsed during the earthquake of 1906.
The number thirteen and spiderwebs were both considered to be lucky by the eccentric widow. She had both repeatedly worked into the design of the mansion.
Tours & Events
