Information
William R. Fairchild International Airport
The airport that would eventually become the William R. Fairchild International Airport began in 1934. The airport in Port Angeles, Washington (see Port Angeles, Washington) was an joint effort between the US military and the Works Progress Administration. The administration was one of the programs created by the US Government under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in an attempt to create jobs and stimulate the economy during the Great Depression.

In 1948, the airport passed into the ownership of Clallam County. It was renamed Clallam County Municipal Landing Field at this time. Within just a few years the airport passed to the ownership of the city of Port Angeles. In 1953, William R. Fairchild became the first supervisor of the airport. Fairchild died in an airplane accident in 1969 and the airport was named after him in memoriam.

Twilight Saga
At the beginning of the book Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, the main character Isabella "Bella" Swan relocates from Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington (see Forks, Washington) in order to live with her father. During the trip she flew out of Sky Harbor International Airport (see Sky Harbor International Airport) in Phoenix and landed at the William R. Fairchild International Airport in Port Angeles. Her father, Charlie, met her there to bring her home and surprise her with her own truck. Prior to this point, Bella had a yearly tradition of spending a portion of her summer with her father. This would likely have involved these same two airports and both would have been familiar places to her.
