U.S.S. Nightmare
This haunted boat attraction started up in Newport, Kentucky in 1991 and has been going strong ever since. The attraction is now set up on the former steamboat, the William S. Mitchell (after using the U.S. Wake Robin for the first few years), which gained notoriety in 1995 when the vessel broke loose from its dock during a flood that hit Kansas City. The Mitchell floated down the Missouri River and ran into five separate bridges before it could be stopped. Shortly thereafter, the ship was purchased by BB Riverboats and turned into this annual Halloween haunt.
The Story
Accompanying the haunt is a detailed history of the former vessel. It is said that in the early days of the William S. Mitchell, it was dredging during its maiden voyage and uncovered an ancient Indian burial site. Since that day, odd occurrences and strange apparitions have continued to haunt the boat to this day. Naturally, the ship's wild ride down the Missouri River has also been incorporated into the story as a sign of the curse and is now known as the "Massacre on the Mitchell." The story goes that by the time the ship was stopped, over 112 crewmembers had died. Today, those crewmembers continue to walk the hull of the ship that now sits on the Ohio River, waiting for guests that dare come aboard during the Halloween season.
