University Plaza Hotel
This hotel is a popular convention destination in the heart of Springfield, Missouri that reportedly has its own resident ghost. After operating under the banner of the Holiday Inn Springfield University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center for twenty years, the facility was re-branded as the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center on October 27, 2003. The new re-branding accompanied a major renovation and expansion of the property by its owner, the John Q. Hammons Hotels, Inc., to provide more meeting space and facilities for guests. A major renovation of the guest rooms themselves was completed in late-2007.
The Colonel
There are various accounts of the facility being home to a spirit that has been sighted on numerous occasions. The apparition has been described as an elderly gentleman, who is dressed all in black and is seen walking throughout the halls of the hotel or in the ballroom. Reportedly, he is a common sight to the staff, which has affectionately dubbed him, "The Colonel." The story goes that the hotel was built on the site of a plantation formerly owned by a decorated Civil War veteran and it is his figure that is believed to still hang around on the property. Despite the various reported sightings by the staff, the hotel has allegedly decided to not discuss the reports and maintains their silence on the issue. Despite this, word has trickled out and some report that the best times to see the apparition are between 12:00 and 4:00 A.M. in the locations cited above.
