Information
Kalama School District
These school facilities in Kalama, Washington serve students of varying age groups in the Kalama-area and got the silver-screen treatment in the 2008 vampire film, Twilight. Built circa 1938, the surrounding campus actually serves as the major educational hub of the town of Kalama. On site is Kalama Elementary School, which hosts over 400 students, as well as the middle and high school, which serve over a combined 600 students together. While the elementary school is in a separate building on the overall campus, the middle and high schools are combined to serve students from grades 6-12.

Twilight (2008)
The facility was thrust into the international spotlight for its use in the 2008 film adaptation of the bestselling novel, Twilight, by author Stephenie Meyer. In the movie adaptation, the middle/high school was used to double as the famous Forks High School found in the novels (see Twilight Saga: Forks High School under Literary Sites). The real high school is actually over 200 miles to the north of Kalama in the city of Forks, Washington (see Forks, Washington under Literary Sites). It was chosen primarily for its relative proximity to the primary filming locations of the movie in Portland, Oregon, as well as its resemblance to the actual Forks High School. Both schools have a red brick façade, though Kalama Middle High School is actually much larger than its literary cousin. As such, major cosmetic transformations were not required, save for additional vegetation, an outside sign (that declared it "Home of the Spartans"), a large sticker on the main basketball course, and other minor alterations.

Filming on Twilight commenced for a week in mid-to-late-March 2008 and several of the school's students actually took on roles as extras in the film. For the film, the school's lower parking lot located alongside the front of the building was used for the critical scene when Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) shows off his vampire abilities and saves Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) from being crushed by a car. The school's wrestling room was also converted for the critical hospital scene that does not involve the high school, as well as was utilized for a gymnasium scene in the film. Further scenes from Twilight were shot in the school's hallways and the regular gymnasium.

Not all of the Forks High School scenes of Twilight were shot solely at Kalama Middle High School. Madison High School in Portland, Oregon was also utilized for the cafeteria and biology room scenes (see Madison High School, Portland, OR) and the school's field trip to a greenhouse was shot at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon (see Twilight (2008): Clackamas Community College).

Kalama High Today
The school continues to serve students from the surrounding area and remains an active high school. As such, Kalama Middle High School is closed to anyone that is not a student or staff member.
