Sloss Fright Furnace
This seasonal haunted attraction in Birmingham, Alabama has an incredible setting. The attraction takes place inside of an old industrial park that is reputedly the scene of actual hauntings (see Sloss Furnaces National Historical Landmark). In operation since 1998, Sloss Fright Furnace makes use of legends that have surrounded the former foundry for decades as well as forging new ones.
The Legend of Slag Wormwood
According to the tales, James Wormwood was a brutal and unpleasant man who served as graveyard shift foreman at Sloss Furnaces at beginning of the 20th Century. James, who was nicknamed "Slag" by his fearful employees. The abusive foreman is said to have fostered an extremely unsafe work environment, driving his workers to produce pig iron at a hazardous rate and working them to exhaustion. They say more than 40 Sloss workers died in accidents resulting from Slag's abusive leadership and countless more suffered crippling career-ending injuries and horrible disfigurements.
The story goes that Slag finally got his comeuppance in the year 1906, when he took a plunge off of "Big Alice", the tallest of the blast furnaces. It was determined that Slag had been overcome with rising fumes, resulting in his death. There was no chance for an autopsy, as his remains were incinerated instantly when he plunged into a vat of molten ore. Afterward there was some who wondered why Slag had been walking up so high upon Big Alice. It was not a normal spot for him to be found. There were whispers that the cruel foreman had actually been the victim of murder by one or more of his employees, but there was no investigation.
Slag is said to have not let death prevent him from continuing his work. Over the decades, foundry workers and night watchmen claimed to have encountered the angry spirit. At times it would merely glaringly watch the living workers from a distance, but there were moments when Slag would take direct action, yelling "Get back to work!" to those he deemed lazy. Some unfortunate Sloss employees are said to have suffered slaps to the face and burns upon their body from up-close encounters with the deceased foreman.
