Skidmore, Missouri
This little town has been the site of a disproportionate number of violent crimes compared to its small population of roughly 300-400 residents. The many crimes (including a woman stomped to death by her boyfriend) have given the town a dark reputation as a place of violence and death. The two most famous of these crimes are listed below.
The Skidmore Bully
In 1981, Ken Rex McElroy was shot dead in public. Known as the town bully, McElroy had a history of theft, violence, rape and pedophilia. McElroy managed to avoid convictions by keeping local residents in terror for their lives. McElroy murdered while surrounded by witnesses, yet only McElroy's underage wife came forward to testify as to the identity of McElroy's killer. Without any other witnesses coming forward the case never made it to court. A wrongful death lawsuit brought against the accused killer and the local sheriff was dropped after the widow's home was burned down. The case led to a book and a TV movie both titled In Broad Daylight as well as the independent film Without Mercy.
Bobbie Jo Stinnett
In 2004, expectant mother Bobbie Jo Stinnett was strangled and her fetus cut from her womb. Within a day police used computer forensics to find suspect Lisa Montgomery in Kansas. The infant was found alive and in Montgomery's possession. Montgomery had apparently used Stinnett's dog breeding business as an excuse to gain entrance to the home. The alledged murderess reportedly used the internet to locate and contact her victim with the intention of stealing the unborn child for her own. The case is still pending. |
