Scream at the Beach
The haunted attraction located at the Jantzen Beach SuperCenter on Hayden Island in Portland, Oregon offers a wide-array of attractions and activities during the Halloween season. Scream at the Beach had its start in 2001 when haunt veteran Henry Miller decided to capitalize on his over 20 years of experience in the business and dedicated his efforts full-time to developing and producing a haunted attraction in Portland. In the first year alone, the haunt received the honor of being dubbed the number one attraction in the area and it has only grown since. Today, the haunt is recognized as one of the top haunts in the United States and the most popular Halloween event in the Pacific Northwest.
Various others have joined Miller's TW Productions LLC in the years since, with each bringing their own theme and ideas. The team works year-round and has invested over $1 million in all facets of the production - research, construction, materials, planning, and more. Each year, the group redesigns the attractions inside to keep up with the existing trends and offer guests something new each year. The haunt can boast over 400 cast members on any given season and can average around 30,000 visitors on any given season.
The Attractions
In 2007, the haunt featured four separate attractions (Pirates: Isla de los Muertos, CarnEvil Funhouse & Freakshow, Hayden Institute for the Criminally Insane, and Return of the Voodoo Woman), but upped the ante in 2008 by adding on yet another. The 2008 season featured The Awakening (a classic vampire haunt set in an old manor), Zombie Apocalypse (a city under siege by an army of zombies), The Mine (an abandoned mine filled with radiated mutants), Dark Carnival (a dark maze that assaults the senses and is crawling with evil clowns), and Lost Temple (a classic haunt defended by warriors and a ten-foot monster that try to stop guests from finding their way out). In 2010, Scream on the Beach celebrated their tenth year in operation with nine separate attractions centered around a very dark take on the famous Lewis Carroll tale, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
In addition to the major attractions, Scream on the Beach also features live bands, a Mini Glow Golf Course, Tarot card readings, and plenty of photo opportunities. To top it off, there is even a full-featured carnival complete with thrill rides. The Halloween attraction even makes full-use (with "Screamer Special" tickets) of the infamous, reputedly haunted C.W. Parker Carousel (see Jantzen Beach SuperCenter) found in the Jantzen Beach SuperCenter. The carousel, which runs year-round, has long rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of two small children dressed in 1920s clothing.
