Information
The Boston Strangler Slept Here?
Albert DeSalvo, the man convicted of being the Boston Strangler, spent time in this jail.

The Jail
Built in 1813, the jail was determined to be inhumane to house prisoners in by 1991. It was shut down that year.

Housing?
The city of Salem has fought to keep this ominous-looking historical landmark alive. In 2006 plans were set in motion to turn the jail buildings into condominiums, town houses, a restaurant and an art studio. While the jail is currently closed to the public, in a matter of years what was once determined to be inhumane for prisoners may be homes for the public and an eatery for curious tourists.

Howard Street Cemetery
The Salem Jail looms over the Howard Street Cemetery where Giles Corey was pressed to death during the Salem Witch Trials.
