The Mystery of Roanoke
Roanoke Island was the first English settlement in America. From 1584 through 1587, the British experienced disasters in manning a small fort on the island. The first group fled back to England. The second group was slaughtered by natives.
In 1587, 117 men, women and children were brought to Roanoke Island to create a settlement. John White was named Governor of the city of Raleigh, the name of the new settlement. White's stay on the island was brief as he headed back to England for supplies on the same ship that brought them. He left behind his daughter, Eleanor Dare, son-in-law, Annanias Dare and his newborn granddaughter, Virginia Dare... the first English child to be born on American soil.
Thanks to the war between Spain and England, John White was unable to return to the settlement until three years later in 1590. Upon returning he found the settlers had vanished. The fort still stood and the only clues left behind were two messages carved into wood. "Croatoan" read a carving into a post at the fort. The other simply read "Cro" and was carved into a tree. The settlers were never found.
It appears likely that some of the settlers joined in with local natives in order to survive. There is some evidence to support this. However, the dissapearance of England's first American settlement has captured the imaginations of many. It was even an influence in the writing of Stephen King's TV mini-series, The Storm of the Century. Roanoke is even brought up in discussion at points through the mini-series. |
