The Queen Mary's Dark Harbor
Few Halloween haunted attractions can make the claim of being set on a former-ocean liner, but even fewer can claim to be set at place that is notoriously haunted as the Queen Mary (see R.M.S. Queen Mary). The historic ship now serves as a hotel in Long Beach, California, but for years it was a first-class ocean liner that was called into service in World War II. However, it is the stories of the ghosts that reportedly still linger in the hull of the ship for which the Queen Mary is most popularly known for today.
The Queen Mary's Dark Harbor (formerly known as Shipwreck at the Queen Mary) dates back to 1994 when it consisted of a sole maze that weaved its way through the ship's engine room. When the receipts were tallied, the organizers realized that they had boosted the ship's attendance by an estimated 17,000 and the annual event was off and running. The event continued to grow and the size of crowds followed suit. By 2003, the The Queen Mary's Dark Harbor had grown to seven mazes and boasted crowds over 65,000.
By 2008, the event, alternately known as the "Queen Mary Halloween Terror Fest," had scaled down to six haunted mazes, but also featured dance floors, a traveling freak show, and live bands. The attraction now even holds a contest to choose its own emcee - the Fright Mistress of the Queen Mary. The event plays off the haunted reputation of the ship and employs fog machines, animatronics, and more than 400 actors who take on the roles of zombies, corpses, monsters, and of course the ghosts. The mazes and monsters are so elaborate, the group begins preparation and construction seven months in advance. In 2010, the event again scaled down to five mazes, two separate attractions, and 160 monsters.
The Attractions
Aside from the live bands, it is the haunt's five haunted mazes that are the big attraction. In 2010, they included Submerged, Containment, Hellfire, Village of the Damned, and The Cagfe. Aside from the fog-filled corridors, visitors will find dangling bodies, spider webs and plenty of fake blood to go around. And if visitors haven't yet received their thrills, they can always check into a room for an overnight stay on the reputedly haunted Queen Mary.
