The Twilight Saga: New Moon--The Official Illustrated Movie Companion
By Mark Cotta Vaz

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of New Moon. The book contains interviews, exclusive stories, and yes - even information about the filming locations used for the sequel to Twilight.

Information
118 Stevens Drive
This house in West Vancouver, British Columbia is significant for both the architect who designed it as well as its use as a filming location for three movies. Built in 1954, the house was designed by late architect Arthur Erickson. The award-winning Canadian architect also designed Simon Fraser University, the San Diego Convention Center, and many other large structures. His final project was the Ritz-Carlton Vancouver - a construction project that at the time of this writing has been put on hold due to current economic conditions. The current owners and architect, Brian Hemingway, were presented with an award in 2002 for acting to preserve and update Erickson's modernist home on Stevens Drive. The house also received worldwide exposure in that latter 2000s for appearing in a few films, but most notably for its appearance in the two sequels of the blockbuster dark fantasy, Twilight (2008).

Martian Child (2007)
Before its use in New Moon (2009) and Eclipse (2010) however, the house was used as the primary setting in the drama, Martian Child (2007), starring John Cusack. In the film, the house belongs to popular science fiction author (semi-ironic because the house belongs to a book publisher and his family in real life) and widower David Gordon (Cusack). The author adopts a young boy who believes that he is actually an alien from the planet Mars. The two gradually bond as Cusack's character helps the child explore planet Earth. While not released until 2007, shooting for the movie took place in 2005. The interior as well as the exterior of the house were used in the shooting of the movie.

New Moon (2009)
For the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's novel, Twilight, producers chose to use a house in Portland, Oregon to double as the residence of the Cullen family (see Twilight (2008): The Cullen House). However, for the 2009 adaptation of the Twilight sequel, New Moon, production moved to Vancouver, British Columbia rather than returning to Oregon due to lower shooting costs. The move precipitated a need for new structures to represent the homes of the characters. This led to the selection of the house at 118 Stevens Drive for use as the fictional home of the Cullen family. Shooting on New Moon began in March 2009. The house was used for both exterior and interior shooting. Interestingly, this makes it the third "Cullen House" that fans can see in the real world, as a bed and breakfast in Forks, Washington (where the Twilight novels are set) has been designated by the city to represent the fictional Cullen home (see Twilight Saga: The Cullen House) for visiting fans.

In Meyer's Twilight Saga of books, the Cullen's are a coven of good vampires who abstain from feeding on humans. One of the vampires, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), falls in love with a human girl named Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), complicating her life and his existence. The events of New Moon tear the couple apart, causing the Cullen's to relocate for a time and driving Bella into depression and risk-taking behavior. During this time she grows closer with local boy, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), who becomes her best friend, but ultimately further complicates things for all of them when he becomes a werewolf.

While the Cullen house is the scene of an event early on in New Moon that leads Edward Cullen to break up with Bella Swan, the house sits empty and unused for the majority of story. The third novel, Eclipse, makes up for this by heavily using the Cullen house as a setting for a number of scenes. Production on the Eclipse adaptation began in August 2009 in Vancouver and it appears that the house on Stevens Drive has been used as a location for that upcoming film as well. So it is likely that the house will be seen by film audiences far more in that movie.

The House Today
Despite its use as a filming location, the house at 118 Stevens Drive still remains a private residence. The home is located at the end of Stevens Drive and can be seen publicly from the road. Progressing onto the property itself constitutes trespassing. Steps should also be taken to avoid impeding the flow of area traffic and/or blocking the driveways of neighboring homes. As always, please respect the owner's right to privacy and that of their neighbors.
