The Museum of Mourning Photography & Memorial Practice
Founded by Anthony Vizzari, this museum is dedicated to the anthropological study of funerary memorials and mostly outdated practice of photographing the deceased as a memorial keepsake. A common practice in Nineteenth Century, post-mortem portraits faded out of vogue by the early Twentieth Century. Frequently (and disturbingly for modern viewers) the portraits were often taken of deceased children due to the high mortality rate amongst infants and children of that time period.
The Museum of Mourning Photography & Memorial Practice holds more than six hundred photos in its collection. To view the museum's collection a potential visitor must set up an appointment through email: info@mourningphoto.com
