Midnight Fear
This ever-changing annual Halloween haunted attraction in Central Vermont stands out from the rest of the industry for its unique approach. Established in 2007, Midnight Fear changes not only their theme each year, they have even changed their location as well. Past years have found the haunt in the nearby towns of Berlin and Waterbury, before settling in Barre for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

The haunt is the creation of resident Kathy Smith, president of the Vermont Haunters Club, alongside her "partners in crime." Smith got her start in the haunt industry by volunteering as a guide/actress at a Halloween fundraiser at the local Lions Club and has been hooked ever since. Her group was established as a non-profit organization that gives back the money raised through Midnight Fear to their local community in donations, with a special emphasis given to the Vermont National Guard Family Readiness Group.

Looking to reinvent the Halloween attraction each year, Midnight Fear introduces new themes into the haunt each year. In 2007, the haunt adopted a twisted fairy tales theme for their inaugural season at Waterbury National Guard Armory. In 2008, the group dubbed the haunt, Terrors that Haunt the Night, and adopted the theme of phobias when they moved their operation to the National Guard Armory in nearby Berlin. In their first season in Barre at the Old Labor Hall, the group came to town with a plethora of zombies in Zombie Invasion.

As the haunt has grown in size and popularity, so has the amount of volunteers that work behind the scenes. Around 50 volunteers pitched in to bring Midnight Fear to life in 2009 for an estimated 800-1000 guests - an impressive number considering that the attraction is only held over a few nights near Halloween. Despite the limited nights, the preparation begins well in advance. The Vermont Haunters Club begins the initial planning stages for each Halloween season in March with actual layout and design starting up in August. By mid-September, they are hard at work moving props, lumber, and other assorted needs to the location with construction beginning in early October.

The number of volunteers jumped again in 2010, this time to 75, as the group relocated to even more space at the Vermont Granite Museum. The museum was interested in holding its own Halloween fundraiser and decided to approach the Vermont Haunters Club for their assistance. The new partnership opened up around 25,000-square-foot granite shed, giving Midnight Fear its largest space to work with to date for their latest theme, Terror at the Museum. Proceeds from the 2010 haunt went to the National Guard program listed above, as well as the museum to assist in their efforts in preserving the Vermont granite industry.

Terror at the Museum
For the 2010 Halloween season, Midnight Fear was transformed into a small town set in the 1900s; including the schoolhouse, church, saloon, and butcher shop. Guests travel through the town as the actual ghost stories and legends of Barre and Central Vermont are reenacted. Of course, Terror at the Museum is all mixed together with spooky sound effects, pyrotechnics, creepy props, and more than a few monsters wandering around.
