Information
The Assassination of President William McKinley
A stone marker lies on this street to mark the spot where American President William McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901 by assassin Leon Czolgosz. At the time of the shooting the area was being used for the Pan-American Exposition. McKinley was shot as he greeted the public inside the Temple of Music.

The President died from gangrene caused by his wounds. It is possible that his life might have been saved had his doctors utilized the new X-ray machine on display at the exposition. They refused to use it for fear of what damage this new technology might cause to the injured President.

McKinley's assassin, Anarchist Leon Czolgosz, had lye and acid poured upon his corpse following his execution by electric chair. It was a final indignity visited upon the assassin for his crime.

The McKinley Assassination Marker sits on the center median dividing Fordham Drive into one way driving lanes. The marker stands right in front of 30 Fordham. You'll be able to read the plaque if you stand on the same side of the street as 30. From the opposite side, the marker just looks like one of the large rocks that decorate the median along its length.
