The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
The Mariner's Church of Detroit holds an annual memorial service for those who have lost their lives in the Great Lakes of North America. The service is held every November and originally started as annual memorial for the crew of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. From 1975 through 2005 the church held the tradition of tolling its bell 29 times; once for each man killed when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. In 2006 the church expanded the memorial service to cover all who had perished in the Great Lakes and changed the number of times the bell was rang. It now rings once for each of the five Great Lakes, once for the St. Lawrence Seaway, once for the St. Clair and Detroit rivers and once for members of the military who have perished.
