Information
Home of Stagger Lee
This is the reported home of Lee "Stack Lee" Shelton, who has been immortalized in the murder ballad, Stagger Lee.  The back-end of the building still has the "crib houses" that Shelton built for his working girls.  According to the book, Stagolee Shot Billy (see below), each of these cribs was "equipped with a bed, a washbasin, and a towel."  Shelton was said to have a good reputation among his prostitutes and allowed them to keep all tips and gifts they received. It is unclear about what happened to the home after Shelton's incarceration for the murder of William "Billy" Lyons at the nearby Bill Curtis Saloon.

The House Today
The house still stands and was designated a city landmark by St. Louis in November 1978.  It is one of the few fortunate buildings to survive being torn down by city officials, who attempted to clear and clean-up the former "red light" district.  Today, it stands out primarily for being one of the oldest buildings in a relatively industrial area. It has since served as the Sommer House Restaurant and most recently as the Rowhouse Gallery.  Its current status is unknown.
