Knoxville Girl
Knoxville, Tennessee is the setting for the infamous Appalachian murder ballad, Knoxville Girl. The song actually is not based on an actual murder here, but an Americanized version of the 19th century Irish murder ballad, Wexford Girl, or even the British version, Oxford Girl. All versions are believed to be derivative of an old English broadside ballad known as The Cruel Miller. The American version is interesting of note because it is actually quite a bit less explicit in its violence, but is considered far more brutal and/or creepy. Part of the reason of this may have something to do with the fact that several of the artists that have performed it (The Louvin Brothers or The Country Gentlemen specifically) give the song an upbeat rhythym and harmonize the vocals.
