The Witch House
This is the former home of Salem Witch Trial Judge, Jonathan Corwin; one of the two judges involved in the trials. It is the only building with ties to the Witch Trials that still stands in Salem. The home is now a museum displaying furniture and lifestyle of the 1600s. The attraction is called "The Witch House" to lure in tourists, but the house tour discusses very little about the trials and Corwin's ties to it. Rather, a visitor will learn things like how toast was made in a fireplace during that era.
Jonathan Corwin
Jonathan Corwin was not originally among the 6 judges in the Court of Oyer and Terminer in Salem County in 1692. Colonel Nathaniel Saltonstall, a judge who had been appointed to the court, resigned only 12 days after it activated. Corwin was appointed as his replacement. Jonathan Corwin had previously been involved during the beginning of the witch hysteria. He and Judge John Hathorne had examined the first three women accused of witchcraft (Tituba, Sarah Osborne and Sarah Good) on March 1 of that year. It had been during that examination that Tituba confessed, naming others as practitioners of witchcraft as well. It was the moment that inflamed the situation in Salem into a full-blown hysteria.
Bewitched
The Jonathan Corwin House was used as a shooting location for the television show Bewitched during its seventh season. The house almost serves as bookends for the 8 episode "Salem Saga", appearing in both the first episode To Go or Not to Go, That Is the Question and Samantha's Old Salem Trip. In the former episode Darrin, Samantha and Endora stop their car in front of the "Witch House" briefly. Darrin asks if they'd like to go in and is rebuffed by Samanth. She states that it would be like "asking Napoleon if he'd like to revisit Waterloo." In the latter episode, the house was central to the plot; a time travel story in which Samantha Stephens is transported to Salem during the height of the Salem Witch Trials.
The on location shooting of Bewitched had a positive impact on tourism of Salem. Decades later Salem's days with Bewitched were commemorated with a statue in Lappin Park. |
