Edgar Allan Poe
This bar, currently called The Horse You Came In On Saloon, is claimed to be the tavern in which author and poet Edgar Allan Poe drank shortly before he was found on the streets incoherent and fatally ill on October 3, 1849.
Poe would die at the Washington College Hospital four days later. The exact cause of his death remains a mystery. Strangely when Poe was discovered in his semiconscious state, he was wearing clothing that appeared not to belong to him. He was heard to yell out the name "Reynolds" while on his death bed. It is a mystery that intrigues many to this day.
There are claims that the rooms above the saloon are haunted by a spirit that the locals have nicknamed "Edgar". The bar offers live musical entertaiment on weekends.
False Reputation?
There are claims that The Horse You Came in On Saloon is not the tavern that Poe was in before he was found ill in the streets. It is claimed that the tavern in question was actually the 4th Ward Polls tavern that used to stand at 44 East Lombard Street. Reading through the Poe timeline by the Edgar Allan Poe Society it states that "Poe (was) found by Joseph W. Walker and taken into Cornelius Ryan's 4th Ward Polls, a tavern at Gunner's Hall, 44 East Lombard Street, awaiting the arrival of his friend Dr. Joseph Evans Snodgrass."
This implies that the tavern at 44 East Lombard Street was entered by Poe AFTER he was discovered in his sorry state. It does not refute the claim that The Horse You Came in On Saloon was the tavern that Poe attended prior to be being discovered by Joseph Walker. So the claim may be true. |
