Information
Kurt Cobain
Alternative rock musician Kurt Cobain was born in Hoquiam, Washington on February 20, 1967. His first home was on Aberdeen Avenue (he only lived there for about 6 months). His father worked at a service station on Simpson Avenue.

In the late 1980s, Cobain and his friend Krist Novoselic formed the band Nirvana. The band found success after adding drummer Dave Grohl and recording/releasing the album Nevermind in 1991. While alternative music had been drifting more and more into the ears of the general listening audience in the late 80s and early 90s, Nevermind really rocketed alternative into the mainstream.

With success practically equalling dishonor for many musicians within the genre, the attention arguably caused as much, if not more, damage to the alternative scene as it caused success. While some music acts thrived, others imploded under the pressure of fame or quickly grew stale in their new environment. It also led to the formation of new bands within that music genre, some of them talented and others just following the trend.

While Nirvana may have touched off this trend, the band was as surprised as anyone that it had happened. They publicly remained humble and appeared to be uncomfortable with their success. There was some good with the mainstream run of alternative music and some decent acts did emerge during that time.

Success apparently weighed heavily on Kurt Cobain and may have been a factor in his death. However, it can also be claimed that the signs of Kurt's self-destruction predate his band going mainstream. He was a heroin addict years before Nevermind was released. He also obviously suffered from depression. On April 8, 1994, Cobain's dead body was found by an electrician hired to install a security system in his home. It was determined that he'd taken his own life with a shotgun 3 days earlier...though there are some who believe that his death wasn't a suicide.

Twilight Saga
Hoquiam, Washington is also a location used in the fictional Twilight Saga of books by Stephenie Meyer. In the first book, Twilight, it is revealed that the Cullen family (really a coven of vampires) moved to Hoquiam in 1936 and lived there for a few years after making a treaty with the local Native Americans in La Push (see La Push, Washington). The family returns many decades later to reside in Forks (see Forks, Washington).

Bigfoot
There have been a decent number of Bigfoot sightings throughout Gray's Harbor County, of which Hoquiam is part. On July 26, 1969, a sheriff's deputy spotted a creature matching the description of Bigfoot on Dekay Road slightly North of Hoquiam. The deputy saw what he first took to be a bear in his headlights. He slowed down as he approached only to see an extremely tall man-like beast covered with dark hair. It's eyes glittered at him from its leathery face as his car's lights drew near. The creature then walked off of the street and disappeared into some bushes.

The following morning the officer returned and found footprints in the mud along the road. The prints measured 18 and half inches in length.
