Information
The Van Der Klok House
This private residence is located in South Pasadena, California and played a minor role in the 1978 horror classic, Halloween. In reality, the house is located alongside Montrose Avenue, which is also heavily featured in the film, although is presented as a street in the fictional city of Haddonfield, Illinois.

Halloween (1978)
Now considered a classic by critics and fans alike, Halloween is the story of a group of friends that are terrorized and killed off at the hands of the now-infamous horror icon, Michael Myers. The action takes place 15 years after Myers brutally murdered his sister at a nearby home (see Halloween (1978): The Myers House) and has recently escaped from a mental asylum and returned to Haddonfield. Once there, he becomes fixated on the character of Laurie Strode and begins killing off her friends one by one until only she is left.

The house appears in a scene where friends Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis), Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes), and Lynda van der Klok (P.J. Soles) are walking home from school. As they come down the street, Lynda breaks off from the group to go inside this house. Only a small portion of the house is seen in the clip as Lynda crosses the lawn and heads up to the porch. The sequence is immediately followed by the infamous hedge sequence where Laurie spots Michael Myers stalking them.

One interesting production note concerns the casting of actress P.J. Soles in the role of Lynda van der Klok. By the time of the production, Soles had already graced the horror genre in the 1976 Brian De Palma adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie. Reportedly one of the admirers of her performance in that film was Halloween director John Carpenter. According to the official Halloween Web site (see external links below), Carpenter believed that she had "...captured the aura of a happy go lucky teenage girl in the 70's." Some sources take it one step further and suggest that the role of van der Klok was drafted with her specifically in mind.

The production of Halloween took over Montrose Avenue during the month of April 1978 and featured a few other key locations on the street; including the infamous hedge (see Halloween (1978): The Hedge Scene) and the nearby home of Annie's character (see Halloween (1978): The Brackett House). Various other locations in the movie were also located in the city of South Pasadena, as well as a few critical locations in the West Hollywood area. All of the locations have become a popular tourist stop following the release of Halloween on October 31, 1978. Today, it is not uncommon to find fans of the film making the pilgrimage to this area to see the Halloween locations firsthand.

The House Today
While the house was never fully shown in the film, enough of it appeared to see that very little has changed in the years since. However, the home is a private residence and it is safe to assume that the owner would rather not be bothered. Halloween fans that want to see the house in person should not trespass and respect the owner's right to privacy.
