Information
The Hedge Scene
The vegetation in front of this private residence in South Pasadena, California may in fact be more famous than the actual house, if only for its appearance in the 1978 horror classic, Halloween. The hedges that extend from the house to the nearby sidewalk and act as a natural barrier from the houses on either side may be more trimmed back today than they were in the 1970s, but are still easily recognizable from a rather creepy scene in the movie.

Halloween (1978)
In the film, the bushes and various houses that line Montrose Avenue were transported to the fictional city of Haddonfield, Illinois. In Halloween, the city experiences a night of terror on the Halloween holiday as an escaped mental patient by the name of Michael Myers returns to the scene of a horrific crime he committed 15 years before to pick up where he left off.

The hedges in front of the house appear in Halloween after the characters of Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes) have just dropped off their friend, Lynda van der Klok (P.J. Soles), at a house just down the road. As Annie rummages through her bag, Laurie notices a man wearing a Halloween mask (Michael Myers) standing alongside the shrub. After she looks away to point him out to Annie, he has disappeared. Annie goes to investigate but finds no one hiding behind the hedges.

Though set in the fictional city of Haddonfield, the girls's stroll down Montrose Avenue is true to real life and does not feature any fancy editing. The hedges, the van der Klok house (see Halloween (1978): The Van Der Klok House), and the Brackett house (see Halloween (1978): The Brackett House) are all on the same side of the street and are exactly located just as they were presented in the film. Filming for Halloween took place primarily in South Pasadena and West Hollywood during the month of April 1978 and the film was released later that year, on October 25. During this particular sequence, there is one shot where a whisp of smoke is visible in the air. According to director John Carpenter, the smoke came from a cigarette he was smoking while being to close to the camera.

The House Today
As mentioned prior, the hedges are not kept as high as they were at the time of the production, but are easily recognizable. The house appears slightly shrouded in the film, but can be seen to a lesser degree. Aside from a different paint job with a dark red trim, it has not changed that much as well. However, it is a private residence and it safe to assume that the owner would probably not find folks hiding behind their shrubbery as amusing as Halloween fans might think. Tourists that plan to visit should respect the owner's right to privacy and not trespass on the property.
