Information
Closed for 2010
The official Web site for
Gyro's 4D Fear Factory
(see Related Sites below) is stating that the haunt will be closed for the 2010 Halloween season, as the producers are currently at work on a film project. However, the site also states that the haunt will return in 2011. In the meantime, the past seasonal information is included below.
Gyro's 4D Fear Factory
Since the 1989, Gyro Haunts has been producing top-notch Halloween haunted attractions throughout the Bay Area of California. The organization got its start in 1988 when entrepreneur/entertainment director Dan Nelson founded the non-profit organization, GYRO (Global Youth Resource Organization), in order to raise funds to fight substance abuse among juveniles and other youth-related programs. In order to raise funds, the group decided to try their hands at haunted attraction events in the Bay Area.
The group got started in 1989 with
Gyro's World of Terror
and based on their success, continued to expand throughout the area by adding haunts in San Jose, San Francisco, Sunnyvale, Sacramento, Cupertino, Milpitas, and even Paramount's
Great America
and the
Scream Park
at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The attractions took on various names such as
Gyro's Scream Factory
,
Gyro's Scream Park
,
Gyro's Festival of Fear
,
Gyro's Screamfest
, and most popularly,
Gyro's 3D Fear Factory
.
Within eleven years, the group had raised over $1 million for the local charities and decided to take their venture commercial in 1999. Since their creation, they have become a major force in the haunted attraction industry and innovators in haunt-related technology. In fact, their digital stereoscopic 3D film technology deployed in
Gyro's 3D Fear Factory
was so cutting edge, they developed a new company called Kerner Mobile Technologies around it in 2007.
The attractions are being designed year-round and, depending on location, have been known to attract anywhere between an estimated 25,000 and 75,000 visitors each year. Their specialty has been to gear their haunts towards the adult horror crowds, choosing to classify the attractions as "
R-Rated Halloween entertainment
." The actors inside are put through months of training and target folks the moment they walk in the gates.
For the 2008 season, the company decided to consolidate their efforts into one Halloween attraction and move it to the
Waterworld, California
amusement park in Concord. There, they unleashed their newest technology in
Gyro's 4D Fear Factory
. The event utilizes their patent 3D technology, a format that allows projected ghosts, madmen, and evil creatures to appear closer than they actually are, with a fourth dimension. The added effects seamlessly blends in live actors, fog, and air jets that choreographed and synchronized with the movements of the audience. The technology allows visitors to walkthrough what is essentially a 3D movie. The event continued in 2009, but this time located at
Raging Waters
in San Diego.
The Attraction
Visitors to
Gyro's 4D Fear Factory
will find a variety of different attractions and events spread out over 100,000-square-feet. The first is the signature
4D UnderWorld
that arms their guests in with special polarized glasses to experience a world filled with vampires, werewolves, spiders, bats, and is described as "
a dark video game
."
Horrorwood Theater
revives such horror screen legends as Freddie, Jason, and Leatherface and pits them against the guests inside a haunted maze. For those into outdoor haunts, the attraction offers
Deadman's Cove
, which is set in a pirate's village where the dead do not rest.
Return to Sleepaway Camp
throws its guests into the scenes and sets of the horror film sequel and also features clips from the upcoming movie. The site also features an interactive 3D gaming zone, live music with DJ, as well as concessions. Despite its location, the water rides of
Waterworld, California
are closed during the event.
