Information
Stagger Lee
An unmarked grave in Greenwood Cemetery is the reported final resting place of Lee "Stack Lee" Shelton, who died on March 11, 1912.  Shelton was immortalized by the murder ballad, Stagger Lee, which was based on Shelton's murder of Billy Lyons on December 25, 1895.  Shelton was convicted of the murder, but was released in 1909.  Two years later he would be re-incarcerated for assault and robbery in the Missouri State Penitentiary, where he would die of tuberculosis.

Other Notable Graves
Greenwood Cemetery is also the final resting place for Harriet Robinson Scott.  Scott was married to Dred Scott and together they battled for their freedom from slavery.  In 1857, their case was denied by the infamous Dred Scott Decision by the U.S. Supreme Court and was one of the factors that led to the Civil War.  Dred Scott was buried in nearby Calvary Cemetery with a gravestone for his wife as well, but this is the actual location of her burial. The cemetery also holds the remains of famous blues musician Walter Davis.
