George A. Romero & The Latent Image
From the early to late 1960s, this office building housed the office of The Latent Image. The Latent Image was a company founded by George A. Romero, Russ Streiner and Richard Ricci. The company produced television commercials primarily. The office was located on the sixth floor. The second floor was used as a film studio by the company.
In 1967, funding was scraped together to make a horror film that eventually became the classic Night of the Living Dead (1968). This led to the formation of Image Ten Productions.
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
The basement of the office building was used for the basement scenes in Night of the Living Dead. It is here that Cooper family sought safety, only to all perish in some of the film's most ironic moments. Here Karen Cooper (Kyra Schon) succumbs to her infected zombie bite. Harry Cooper (Karl Hardman) stumbles down these steps to die from his gunshot injury and ultimately have his flesh eaten by his newly undead daughter. Helen Cooper (Marilyn Eastman) discovers the gruesome scene and is dispatched by her zombie daughter with a masonary trowel.
In further irony, it is here in the basement where Ben (Duane Jones) finds safety despite his earlier protests that it was a death trap.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
The scenes in Dawn of the Dead showing the protagonists holed up in their secret hideout inside the mall were actually shot in the second floor studio of this office building. The rooftop fire fight between SWAT team members and gun-toting project tenants was shot on the roof of this building. The elevator shaft in this building was used in place of the mall elevator shaft scenes as well. |
