Dungeon of Horrors
This annual Halloween haunted attraction is set at the infamous West Virginia Penitentiary (see West Virginia Penitentiary) in Moundsville, which is also home to countless ghost stories and reports of paranormal activity. The prison housed inmates from 1876 through 1995 and was the scene of several riots, just under a hundred executions, escapes, and countless accounts of violence among the inmates. It had the infamous notoriety of maintaining a constant presence on the Department of Justice's Top Ten Most Violent Correctional Facilities for many of the years it was in operation. Today the Moundsville Economic Development Council maintains the site and offers a variety of different events including tours, in addition to sponsoring this Halloween haunt.
Now an annual tradition, the Dungeon of Horrors has continued to grow over its nearly a decade of operation. Today, the haunt features around 50 actors working with animatronics and professional sound and lighting systems to provide the scares. The production team consistently works on changes to the attraction in the off-season so returning visitors will find something new each season. Quickly gaining a national reputation, the haunt pulls in an estimated crowd of 10,000 each year.
The Attraction
Visitors to the Dungeon of Horrors are met by a fictitious character, which was added in the 2008 season and comes complete with their own back-story of incarceration inside the facility. Once inside the haunt, guests are treated to their own lockdown and are forced into cells before being moved into a haunted maze. At one point, the visitors are loaded into their own personal caskets (that were added in 2007) and are transported 100-feet into the next room. In total, visitors are led through 21 different areas, including the cellblocks and several areas in the downstairs such as the reputedly haunted "Sugar Shack." Given the notorious haunted history of West Virginia Penitentiary, guests may find more than just the staff and effects inside.
