Arkham Asylum?
This mental hospital was mentioned by author H.P. Lovecraft in some of his writings. It may have been the model for Lovecraft's fictional Arkham Asylum.

Judge Hathorne
Salem Witch Trial Judge John Hathorne owned the property at the time of the Salem Witch Trials. John is also the Great Grandfather of author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Session 9
The horror film Session 9 was set here and actually filmed on location.

Lobotomy! Lobotomy!
The hospital is known as the place where the full frontal lobotomy procedure was perfected.

Avalon Danvers Apartments
The hospital was built in 1878 and was shut down in 1992. It has been abandoned and closed off from the public since then. In 2006 most of the property was torn down to make way for apartments. The Avalon Danvers apartments has part of the facade of the original hospital as part of its construction. It is still recognizable, though there is a bright homey feel that has taken the place of the one of dark foreboding.
