In 1796, Stephen Staples approached the town council of Cumberland to ask permission to unearth the corpse of his deceased teenage Daughter. He claimed that digging up his dead Daughter would allow him to save his remaining Daughter from death. While vampirism is not mentioned specifically in the documentation of this council meeting, it is very likely that this is the first recorded case of a Rhode Islander digging up a corpse to check for signs of vampirism.
