The Burns Archive
In the 1970s, eye surgeon Doctor Stanley Burns started a private collection of daguerreotypes and other antique photographs. Eventually this collection became nationally recognized as one of the largest of its type and led to the collection finding permanant display in New York City. Amongst the photos in the collection are a large number of medical photos (including pictures of sideshow performers) as well as post-mortem portraits taken of deceased individuals as part of their families' grief rituals. Also to be found in the collection are photos of crime scenes, executions and the aftermath of police shootouts with infamous gangsters like John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd.
