The Beast
This Halloween haunted attraction in Kansas City, Missouri got its start in 1991 and advertises itself as "Kansas City's Most Elaborate Haunted House." It has gained a reputation throughout the United States for the elaborate scenes inside and attention to detail. It also pioneered what they call the "open format," where visitors don't walk in a line and freely wander through its maze of scenes, trying to find their own way out. The Beast is produced by Full Moon Productions, which runs several other haunts throughout the Kansas City area including the long-running, The Edge of Hell (see The Edge of Hell).
Some of the attractions you will find in The Beast include a pitch-black maze, a foggy forest filled with werewolves, a swamp that features a live eight-foot alligator, and a recreation of Jack the Ripper's London that even includes torture chambers. The Werewolf Forest is 1/4 acre in size and aside from the constant fog, visitors have to deal with the simulated thunder and lightning, while dodging the inhabitants of the forest. The estimated 45-minute adventure even ends with a slide that drops its guests down four stories.
