Information
The Myers House North Carolina
Fans of the 1978 John Carpenter horror classic
Halloween
will surely do a double take when they encounter this house located in rural Hillsborough, North Carolina. As if it had been mysteriously transported from the world of movies to Orange County, North Carolina, here stands the infamous Myers house - home of the infamous (yet fictional) Michael Myers and the home where he started his killing spree. The same fans might be momentarily confused that the fictional Haddonfield, Illinois house is here in North Carolina, because they know that the very real house used in the production is actually located in South Pasadena, California (see
Halloween (1978): The Myers House
). However, as soon as they hear the story of owner Kenny Caperton and this lifelong dream coming to fruition, they will completely understand. Even better, they will probably be envious.
The Dream
The so-called "
Myers House North Carolina
" is the result of Caperton's lifelong fascination and devotion to the now-classic John Carpenter film. Aside from citing
Halloween
as his favorite movie for his entire life, Caperton acknowledges seeing the movie countless times and memorizing every little detail about the film. Truly, a fan's fan if there ever was one. And his fascination did not end with late-night screenings of the film. According to Caperton, "
I've said for years that if I could pick any house in the world to live in, it would be the original Myers House from John Carpenter's
Halloween
.
"
Of course, as most
Halloween
fans are aware, that little dream is ripe with complications. The actual house used in the production does still exist over on the West Coast, a bit of a distance from rural North Carolina, but there are even more problems than general location. The local city landmark is known as The Century House and has since been converted to house various local businesses in South Pasadena. Those complications aside, the house is now located right next to a local trolley line, which would surely be a minor irritation for anyone that actually wanted to live there.
The Inspiration
Kenny Caperton's devotion to the series and the horror genre attracted the attention of horror filmmaker and musician, Rob Zombie and wife Sheri Moon Zombie, who ended up soliciting Caperton's assistance to work on a couple of Web pages they had in the works (Caperton has worked with the couple since 2006 and now runs all of their MySpace pages in addition to designing and maintaining the site for Sheri's clothing line,
Total Skull
- see Related Sites below). Soon after, Zombie signed up to film a remake of
Halloween
and rewarded Caperton with a cameo appearance in the movie as a trick-or-treater, though the scene ultimately ended up being excised from the film. However, Caperton made the journey to Hollywood to see the world premiere of Zombie's
Halloween
and decided to take another trip to visit the location used in the first film (a tradition whenever Caperton visits California). When he got home and looked over his photos, inspiration hit.
At the time, Caperton and his girlfriend, Emily, were saving up money to purchase their own home in Hillsborough. With the images of the house he saw on his trip still lingering, he suddenly thought, "
maybe I could just build the Myers House to live in.
" Fortunately, Emily also liked the look of the Victorian home and Caperton went to work. He reports, "
In the next 5 minutes I was on the phone with the Pasadena City Plan office trying to find blueprints.
"
The Myers House Rebirth
The process has not been without its setbacks and delays. The couple located a plot of land that covered 5.21 acres that had been recently foreclosed upon. It was perfect for their needs and they quickly placed an offer on the land. Its foreclosed status rose more than a few complications that resulted in more offers and counter-offers, but ultimately the couple closed on the property and one hurdle was passed. On top of this, the blueprints to the original 1888 house could not be located, so Caperton was forced to call some of the actual businesses located in the existing Century House to solicit their aid. Fortunately, he found a kindred spirit in fellow-graphic designer, Carol Zorn who works in the famed-building and provided assistance in measurements and photographs. After months of complications and headaches, work began on the property in August of 2008.
Seeing as the original house was built in 1888, the actual design was not completely complimentary to modern-day conveniences. Ironically enough, the
Halloween
production ran into a few of these hitches themselves and were forced to add on to the home to get it to fit their needs (renovations that have since been removed). As such, Caperton had to make a few minor alterations to the floor plan, such as adding two full-size bathrooms whereas the original only contained one small half-bath. While wanting to stay true to the look of the film, Caperton also realized that he would quickly grow tired of the 1970s look of its film portrayal and opted for "
...more of a Horror Museum/Victorian/Old Farm House feel with modern touches.
" While Caperton acknowledges that it is not an exact replica and, "
...sadly Michael will have to go a slightly different way to kill Judith at The Myers House NC
,"
Halloween
fans will surely forgive him for the few alterations made.
Perhaps the most striking alteration to this version of the Myers House is the area around the house. While the original house was in the middle of suburbia, surrounded by neighboring Haddonfield (South Pasadena) houses, the North Carolina cousin is "
...surrounded by woods and country farmland.
" Despite this, and the interior alterations, the house is about as close as one can get to a modern-day replica of the infamous house as the photos to the right can attest.
Reactions
Caperton's efforts have not gone unnoticed by the media or the residents in the surrounding area. The story of his dream and the house's construction has been covered by everyone from the local press to newspapers out to South Pasadena, California. According to Caperton, the reaction has been completely positive from friends and family alike. His parents have even made a three-hour trip almost every weekend to assist in the construction and his friends "
...are all just really happy for me and think it's the ultimate perfect house for me to live in.
"
Future Plans
As of March 2009, the Myers House NC was completed and Kenny, Emily, and their two cats (Siva and Loki) have moved in to complete the dream. In fulfilling his dream, Caperton also acknowledges that his efforts have attracted the attention of fellow
Halloween
fans that have an interest in visiting and seeing the house for themselves. In fact, Caperton reports, "
...a lot of people from all over the east coast are already interested in spending Halloween '09 at the old Myers place NC.
" Not wanting to disappoint, Caperton is already planning a big Halloween bash and other assorted events throughout the year.
While a
Halloween
icon now has new life in North Carolina, it is also a private residence. Caperton is hoping that fellow-
Halloween
fans will come and check out the house for themselves, but is asking anyone interested to contact him first to schedule an appointment. For those interested, his contact information as well future event information (once scheduled) is available on his Web site listed below.
