The Amityville Horror
When it came time to film the Samuel Arkoff-produced 1979 adaptation of the bestselling novel, The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson, the filmmakers naturally turned to Amityville, New York to film the picture. However, the town officials were reportedly unhappy with the publicity the case and book generated, and consequently turned down their requests. The filmmakers then turned to Toms River, New Jersey some 60 miles away. This particular house was chosen and the owners were given $15,000 to allow the house to be used and it was quickly remodeled to look like the infamous house on 112 Ocean Avenue (see Amityville Horror House).
Toms River
The entire city of Toms River was utilized with some scenes being shot in the Town Hall, the Community Medical Center, as well as the local newspaper The Daily Planet's office. It is estimated that the production pumped some $250,000 into the local economy and local residents and their dogs were pulled in as extras. 800 local residents were shown the filmmaker's appreciation by being the first to screen The Amityville Horror in March 1979.
The relationships formed persisted and the outdoor scenes of the next two films, Amityville II: The Possession and Amityville 3-D, were both shot in Toms River. However, all of the interior shots were done this time in Mexico. For the 2005 remake, production was relocated to Illinois and Wisconsin, with a house in Salem, Wisconsin being chosen to represent the infamous house (see Amityville Horror Movie House (2005)).
The New Infamy
The release of 1979 version of The Amityville Horror brought a fresh slate of tourists to Toms River and people flocked to this house in particular. The crowd consisted of both those that just wanted to see where the movie was made to those that believed that this particular house was in fact the "haunted" house that was depicted in the book and film.
In an ironic twist, there was so many people showing up to view the house, the owners had to resort to remodeling the home so that it no longer resembled the notorious house, much in the same way the owners of the real 112 Ocean Avenue had to do.
The House Today
This is a private residence and, as stated, the appearance of the home has been changed drastically from how it appeared in the movie. The owners took these steps to discourage people from stopping at the site and taking pictures. As with any private property, please respect the owner's right to privacy. |
