The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
The Split Rock Lighthouse is part of the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park in Minnesota. It currently is run as a museum. The lighthouse holds a memorial event each November 10th to honor the men who perished in the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. While the park is typically closed for the winter, it is opened to the public for this annual memorial service. The memorial includes a reading of the names of crew of the freighter as well as a ceremonial lighting of the light house in their memory.
If you visit during the warmer months, costumed actors recreate what the area would have appeared in the 1920s. There is also camping, hiking and other activities available in the state park.
