Information
Eureka Springs
In the mid-to-late-1800's, Eureka Springs became world-renowned for its "healing waters" of its Basin Spring.  The waters were said to cure crippling diseases that medicine of that day couldn't and the town quickly grew as result.  By 1881, Eureka Springs was the fourth largest city in Arkansas.

Basin Park Hotel
Like its sister hotel, the Crescent Hotel & Spa, Basin Park Hotel took advantage of the visitors that descended upon Eureka Springs seeking the healing waters.  It officially opened its doors on July 1, 1905 and offered 100 rooms, a cage elevator, steam heat, and telephones in every room.  Located in downtown Eureka Springs, it also had the odd distinction of being built into the side of the mountain, making every floor of the hotel ground level.

In 1944, Roy Parkhill of Oklahoma purchased the hotel for his nephew, Joe Parkhill.  Joe wasted no time reviving the hotel and went all-out to entertain his guests, arranging hayrides, horseback riding, dancing, fishing, and starting the now annual event, the Barefoot Ball.  Not long after, Parkhill ignored local laws and installed slot machines and began serving alcohol.  As result, many of his guests became alleged Chicago mobsters, who would seek refuge at the Basin Park Hotel as things calmed down back home in Illinois.  In 1955, the Hotel was raided and Joe and two others were hauled off to jail and all of his slot machines and alcohol were confiscated.  Shortly thereafter, Parkhill sold the hotel and moved on.

In 1997, Marty and Elise Roenigk purchased the hotel at the same time as they purchased the nearby Crescent Hotel.  Like its sister hotel, the Basin underwent a series of renovations and is prospering once again in today's Eureka Springs.  Also like its sister hotel, it has a few reminders of the past hanging around as well.

Ghosts
The hotel has had reported sightings of a little girl around the age of three or four with pigtails and a yellow dress.  Another reported sighting is that of a woman with blonde hair and blue eyes that appears to be transparent.  Odd noises are heard, pool cues have flown off the wall and other objects have been moved, as well as various other strange happenings are commonplace.

Ghost Tour
A haunted tour of the hotel is given on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights through December 16th.  An independent company whose two guides happen to be mediums gives the tours.  The tour explores the hotel, as well as the haunted history of Eureka Springs.  A separate tour, run by the same company, is focused solely on the Basin Park Hotel's sister hotel, the Crescent Hotel & Spa.  Check the site below for more information.
