The Myers House
This private residence in South Pasadena, California actually made its worldwide debut on a 1994 television series, but would play a more ominous role 13 years later as the home of Michael Myers. Before it became that childhood home of a horror film icon however, it was seen in the ABC teen drama, My So Called Life. Both the exteriors and the interiors of the house were used for the pilot episode of the series, while the interiors were later replicated on a soundstage after the series was picked up. Although it only lasted 19 episodes, My So Called Life has developed a large fan following and influenced several teen shows in its aftermath, while at the same time introduced the world to some talented stars - among them were Claire Danes and Jared Leto. Following the series cancellation, the house faded back into obscurity until it was chosen to double as the infamous Myers House in the 2007 Rob Zombie remake of the horror classic, Halloween.
Halloween (2007)
Following the success of his debut film, House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects, Dimension Films signed writer/director Rob Zombie to helm the remake of the 1978 John Carpenter classic, Halloween. The finished product is actually more of a prequel/remake of the film, as it greatly expands the scenes of Michael Myers's incarceration in the Smith Grove Sanitarium and early interaction with Doctor Samuel Loomis. Following his escape from the hospital, he returns to the fictional Haddonfield, Illinois where he continues his killing spree - this time targeting his younger sister and her friends.
Among the changes made in the remake is the amount of screen time the Myers House gets in comparison with the first. The scenes of Myers as a ten year-old (played by Daeg Faerch) at the house are greatly expanded and feature more interaction with his family, which included his sister Judith (Hanna Hall), mother Deborah (Sheri Moon Zombie), and her boyfriend Ronnie White (William Forsythe). It is also the setting of that fateful night when he murders Judith (adding her boyfriend (Adam Weisman) and White to the body count this time around), while while his mother is away at work (see Halloween (2007): The Rabbit in Red Lounge). It is again featured when he returns 15 years later as an adult (Tyler Mane) after his escape from Smith's Grove. Finally, it is the setting of the climax of Halloween between Myers, Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton), and Dr. Loomis (Malcolm McDowell), as opposed to the original film where the action was set at the Doyle House (see Halloween (1978): The Doyle House).
The original Myers House seen in the Carpenter-version of Halloween is located only blocks away from this new version (see Halloween (1978): The Myers House). Years after production had wrapped on the 1978 film, the house was relocated to where it is today and underwent extensive renovations. It now houses various businesses, which pretty much eliminated it from being used in the remake. Instead, Zombie chose to go with this particular house for the remake, while keeping the production in South Pasadena. It is interesting to note that while the original Halloween combined locations in South Pasadena with locations in West Hollywood to make up the fictional city of Haddonfield, all of the Haddonfield houses in the remake are in South Pasadena.
The house is featured in several exterior shots of Halloween, but it was also used for various interior scenes as well. However, these scenes were limited to the front hallway, living room, and basement (later in the film). Additional scenes that featured the kitchen, upstairs, and Judith's room were all shot in other homes in South Pasadena as the house did not have what the filmmakers were looking for. Ironically, the upstairs sequences were shot at the same home that doubled as the Strode residence (Halloween (2007): The Strode House). Finally, the climatic scene in the backyard was shot in the actual backyard of this residence, including the swimming pool. The house directly to the left of the house (while facing it - see images to the right) can be seen during these sequences. According to Zombie, the swimming pool sequence was not in the original script but was added later once this location had been secured.
In the original film, Myers secures his infamous mask (along with knives and rope) by breaking into a local hardware store (see Halloween (1978): Nichol's Hardware Store). In the remake of Halloween, Zombie opted to introduce the mask when Judith's boyfriend brings it into the house and pulls it out of a bag while they are fooling around in the bedroom. According to Zombie, the bag had the name "Nichol's Hardware" printed on it but the scene turned out to be too dark to read it. The name is a reference to the store Myers broke into in the original film.
The House Today
Following the success of the original 1978 Halloween, the Myers House located on Mission Avenue has become a popular tourist stop for fans of the series. It is unclear whether this house will see a similar interest, but given its close proximity to the original, it would not be altogether surprising. It also unknown whether the house will make a return appearance in the upcoming sequel, H2, which is also being written and directed by Zombie. However, the house remains a private residence and it is safe to assume that the owners do not want to be bothered by fans of the series. Any fan wanting to visit the residence should view the house from the sidewalk or road and respect the owner's right to privacy. |
