Natalee Holloway
This resort in Palm Beach, Aruba came to international attention when American tourist Natalee Holloway vanished on May 30, 2005. The young Alabama woman was in Aruba on an unofficial high school graduation trip at the time of her disappearance. Natalee and her fellow graduates were staying at the Holiday Inn - Sunspree Resort during the vacation.
Natalee was last seen in the company of suspects Joran van der Sloot, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe at a Carlos 'n Charlie's restaurant in Oranjestad. The young men have told multiple different accounts of their activities that night. Some versions of their stories included saying that they dropped Holloway back off in the parking lot of this hotel. They claimed to have seen another man approaching her in the parking lot as they drove off.
Natalee Holloway has never been found and the case remains unsolved, though van der Sloot and the Kalpoes have been arrested multiple times on suspicion of her murder. On February 1, 2008, a video surfaced showing Joran van der Sloot confessing to being involved in Natalee Holloway's disappearance after she became unresponsive in reaction to drug use. Not knowing that he was being secretly videotaped, van der Sloot stated that he'd had a friend dump her in the ocean and that for all he knew, she may have still been alive at the time.
Later van der Sloot claimed that his confession was nothing more than a lie told under the influence of marijuana. Patrick van der Eem, who secretly shot the video of Joran van der Sloot, was himself caught on video confessing that van der Sloot had asked him for money to pay off the man who had helped van der Sloot dispose of Natalee's body. The moment was caught while van der Eem was giving an interview for Aruban TV. He was unaware the cameras were rolling at that particular moment. Unfortunately, the footage was aired rather than being provided to authorities and may have hurt the case rather than helped it.
