Ferguson Funeral Home Museum
This funeral home in Scottdale, Pennsylvania provides more than just funeral and cremation services. It is also a functional museum that showcases the life's work of its namesake, William Ferguson.
History
The business that would one day become known as Ferguson Funeral Home was originally started by Samuel D. Aultman in 1880. Aultman had served as a field mortuary technician during the American Civil War, and made a career from the skills he learned during the war. In fact, he was the first mortician to use embalming techniques in Scottdale, PA. Highly successful with his business, Aultman sold it to James Patrick Owens in 1899. Only 2 years later in 1901, Owens would expand the business by partnering with Irish immigrant William Ferguson.
Ferguson, originally a cabinetmaker by trade, had gradually turned his skills toward creating caskets. James Owens and William Ferguson went into business together as the Owens & Ferguson Furniture & Undertaking Company. Ferguson became schooled in mortuary science, but maintained his wood crafting skills by continuing to carve cabinets and other furniture items. William Ferguson passed the business on to his sons and it has continued as a family business for another three generations.
The Museum
Eventually, the furniture aspect of the business was dropped in order to focus on the funeral home. Today the Ferguson Funeral Home also serves as a museum honoring both its founders and the community it is part of. Inside the museum, visitors will find items carved by William Ferguson himself. The collection includes frames, plaques, furniture and six grandfather clocks. Ferguson's entire workshop is on display as well.
Visitors can also view an 1880 Rockfalls horse drawn hearse. The current owner of the funeral home, Robert B. Ferguson Jr. paid to have the hearse restored in the late 1990s. The hearse is functional and is occasionally used for services. It is also appears annually in the Scottdale Community Fall Festival. |
