The Campground Massacre
This nationally known Halloween haunted attraction located in Fort Mill, South Carolina has been scaring their guests since it first opened to the public in 1994. The Campground Massacre is the creation of the husband and wife team, John and Sheila Trigg. Sheila is an acknowledged die-hard sci-fi/horror fan with a lifelong passion for visiting haunted attractions so it seemed a natural progression for her to someday open her very own haunt.
Sometimes in the haunted attraction industry, location is everything and such is definitely the case for The Campground Massacre. The Trigg's opted for a unique spin on their Halloween haunt and opened it on the grounds of the campground, Charlotte/Fort Mill KOA RV Park and Campground, which they own. Aside from setting the haunt in an outdoor setting, it offers visitors a chance to camp overnight on the grounds (campers get extra privileges when it comes to the haunt) or even catch a drink or bite at their John's Place Bar & Lounge.
The first year of the haunt was a four-night affair with fairly modest beginnings, typical of first-year haunts. While complete with decorations and creatures of the night, The Campground Massacre was noted for being bit more gruesome than others in the area. Over 750 visitors broke in the haunt that year and their resulting enthusiasm and response not only encouraged the Triggs to continue the tradition but also to expand the haunted attraction in both size and in their ambitions and it paid off. Within four years, the crowds had grown to ten times the size they were in 1994 and the haunt was definitely off and rolling.
In 2002, the Triggs offered their grounds to host the popular indoor-haunt, Mayhem Manor, which had been located to the south in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina from 1992 through 1999, giving camp visitors a double-dose of terror. That attraction moved on to Texas the next year, but the Triggs decided to keep an indoor haunt as part of the experience and opened their own, Mina's Mansion.
Today the haunt boasts over 50 animatronic creatures and a large crew of actors spread out over the haunt's three main attractions. Aside from the original outdoor haunted trail, the attraction now also boasts the aforementioned indoor haunt, Mina's Mansion, and a spinning tunnel experience that come part of the package. The Campground Massacre's growth has also generated some national attention, landing the Trigg's creation on the cover of a 2004 issue of Haunted Attraction Magazine and the recipient of numerous accolades as one of the best Halloween haunted attractions in the nation. Based on the success of their campground and Halloween attraction, the Triggs further expanded their enterprise in 2008 by opening The 40 Whacks Museum based on the infamous figure, Lizzie Borden, in Salem, Massachusetts.
The Attraction
As mentioned above, guests to the Halloween haunt are treated to three separate attractions. The first feature is Mina's Mansion - a 2,400-square-foot haunted house hosted by the enigmatic figure of Mina (who debuted with the haunt in 1994 and has been with them ever since) with five unique rooms connected by dark hallways. Next up is the spinning tunnel experience, which first joined the haunt in 2004 to separate the two main attractions. The last stop is the mainstay attraction - The Campground Massacre. This attraction takes the guests through three acres of a haunted trail that weaves indoors, as well through the dark woods of the campground, a cave, and over a creepy bridge. Awaiting visitors throughout the three attractions are a variety of monsters that are eager for the chance to provide a few startles.
