The Hermitage
This is the former mansion of United States president Andrew Jackson. The Hermitage occupies 1000 acres of the land around the mansion and was purchased by Jackson in 1804. The name Hermitage was the name that Jackson chose for the land. The mansion itself was built by Jackson around 1821. Eight years later he would become President of the United States and would spend the next eight years in Washington before returning to the Hermitage. He died here on June 8, 1845. After his death, the property fell into disrepair until 1889 and the formation of the Ladies' Hermitage Association, who went right to work at making repairs and opened the Hermitage as a museum for the general public.
