Information
History
This former Army Officer duplex now serves as a bed and breakfast in Hammond, Oregon that offers such themed-stays as Murder Mystery Nights, which seems appropriate for a building that is said to be the home to more than a few spirits. The building was constructed following the Spanish-American War in 1898. Following an American victory, support for the Army was at an all-time high and the Army commissioned top-of-the-line housing for its officers stationed at Fort Stevens. The construction on the structure was complete in 1904 and was the one of the first of several houses built in the neighborhood - each organized by ranking.

The duplex served to house the likes of Colonels, surgeons, and other officers from Fort Stevens through World War II. Following the war, the Army sold the building to the local school district that used it for a short time as a rental property. The building changed hands several times over the years when the Oregon State Parks Department purchased it and converted it into a part-time rental home and bed and breakfast. In 2005, nearby residents Steve and Kim Nurding purchased the facility from the state and continue to run it as a bed and breakfast to this day.

During its early days, the building served as a communications hub for Fort Stevens and it was outfitted in the best technology of the day. Remnants of the old phone system can still be found in the basement of the inn to this day, as well as a pair of old coal chutes that enabled the troops to easily offload the coal they used for the former boiler. Interestingly, the amount of coal that each house received was based on the ranking and number of the occupants inside.

Also found throughout the Inn today is various examples of authentic military memorabilia and trench art - a collection of typical household items like lamps, picture frames, ashtrays, etc. that was constructed from leftover paraphernalia from battles like shell casings and bullets. While the soldiers themselves constructed some of the items, local citizens would build a good amount and sell off their goods to the others passing through the area.

Murder Mystery Night
Guests that stay at the Officer's Inn Bed and Breakfast during spring and winter months have the opportunity to take part in a Murder Mystery Night. Breaking away from traditional "murder mysteries," the inn personalizes the game for guests in attendance and bases their "character" off of each person's own profession and interests. The guests are given a background sheet of their "character" and individual tasks to perform, which may or may not have anything to do with the mystery. Murder Mystery Nights at the Officer's Inn Bed and Breakfast might incorporate everything from an Ouija Board to special effects and start from check-in and continues until checkout. Perhaps even more intriguing is the opportunity to participate in a Murder Mystery Night in a house believed to have a few actual ghosts as well.

The Ghosts
Though it is unclear how many (or if anyone at all) actually died while the duplex served military officials, there has been a variety of odd activity that suggests this to be the case. It is a common occurrence for staff of the bed and breakfast to make the bed and straighten the bedspreads out, only to return later and find a depression on the bed, as if someone had lied down (or was still lying) on the bed when no one else was in the building. Other odd experiences include the smell of formaldehyde in a room that was later discovered to formerly house a military surgeon, reports of soldiers wearing khaki uniforms in formation in the courtyard outside seen from windows in the facility, and some more specific tales that center around various room and areas inside the inn.

The General's Room
Some of the most interesting accounts of strange activity come from the guest room dubbed the General's Room. The Officer's Inn Bed and Breakfast has a variety of historical books available for their guests to read and guests that stay in this particular room often report a strange occurrence with them. The guests will grab a book from the other side of the bed and breakfast and bring them back to the General's Room to read. After they step out of the room for a spell and come back, they find the books have vanished though no one had entered the room in their absence. A subsequent search of the building usually turns up the books back where they belong or in an entirely different room altogether. This activity appears isolated to this room only, as guests staying in other rooms that borrow books have never reported their book being moved in their absence.

Perhaps even more intriguing, guests staying in different rooms on the same floor have reported walking past the General's Room and seeing a man in full uniform standing by the bed. Often the witnesses assume that the person is simply another guest, only to be shocked to discover that no one is staying in the General's Room that night. Even more interesting, this figure has never appeared to the people that actually stay in the room.

The South Side
Guests that stay in rooms on the second floor of the south side of the Officer's Inn have reported strange activity that they attribute to a small child. Typically after they have gone into their room for the evening, they report someone rattling their doorknob, sometimes accompanied by the giggle of a small child. When they go to investigate, they can hear a small child running down the hall giggling who has disappeared by the time they opened the door. The activity appears to be centered mostly on the Colonel's Room, but guests that stay in the other rooms in the area have reported it as well.

The staff has been told by psychics in the past that they felt the presence of twin girls in the building and that one of these girls in particular is something of a prankster. The facility did host officers and their families during its military years, but it is unclear if any children actually died during their time in the house. Interestingly, the presence of a small child has also been felt in the basement of the inn, which is closed to the general public except during Murder Mystery Night.

The North Side
The activity on the second floor of the north side of Officer's Inn Bed and Breakfast is the one that concerns owner Kim Nurding the most. Guests have reported being awoken in the night by the sound of someone slamming a door on the floor. Typically the door that slams happens to be the one in which no guest is staying for the night and it will slam even though it had been closed when the person went to bed. At times, some guests have reportedly gotten up to investigate the noise and re-opened the door to find no one in the room, only to hear the door slam again after they have returned to bed. Reportedly, the event occurs even if the windows are closed and the air conditioning is not running. An interesting note is that this floor lies directly under the section of the house that has been dubbed the "hot spot" for paranormal activity - The Sergeant's Suite.

The Sergeant's Suite
This suite lies on the third floor on the north side of the building and consists of two rooms, with four separate beds and a bathroom complete with a claw foot tub. During its military service, it was common for the officers that resided in the house to employ men under their command to help with odd jobs around the house in exchange for free room and board. It was these men that stayed in what is now known as the Sergeant's Suite. A couple different paranormal groups that investigated the Officer's Inn Bed and Breakfast have all deemed this particular room the "paranormal hot spot" on the facility. It is not uncommon for electrical equipment to malfunction while in the room and strange sensations are commonly reported.
