Information
Hell's Gate Bridge
This abandoned one-lane bridge near Oxford, Alabama is the source of various spooky legends and reports of paranormal activity. It is unclear if this is the real name of the bridge or not, but it is known locally as Hell's Gate Bridge for a good reason. The legend dictates that if you walk to the center of the bridge at night and look back over your shoulder, you will see the gates of Hell behind you. Another creepy tale has the bridge as the location of a fatal car accident that took the lives of a young couple back in the 1950s. The story goes that the driver lost control of his car and it veered off the side and fell into the water below. It is said that if you drive on to the bridge and stop, put the car in park, and turn off your headlights, one of the young couple will sit down beside you on the passenger seat, leaving behind a wet seat.

The Bridge Today
The bridge is no longer in use as of early 2006 and large concrete barriers have been placed on either end, blocking cars from entering - causing issues if you're looking for a phantom passenger. It is presumably no longer being maintained and the wood is looking old. If you plan to visit, you might want to check with local authorities first to determine its accessibility.

The Oxford Paranormal Society
Hell's Gate Bridge was the site of a September 2007 investigation by members of the local Oxford Paranormal Society. A reporter from the newspaper The Anniston Star accompanied the team and wrote a story about the investigation. Though nothing was found, the story put the bridge in the international spotlight. Reports of their findings can be accessed from their site below.
