Haunted Chicken House
This annual Halloween haunted attraction in Heflin, Alabama has an unusual twist - it is set in an actual full-size chicken house. The Haunted Chicken House got its start in 2003 as a fundraiser by members of the Hollis Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department and by all accounts, they have been fairly successful. On top of raising an estimated $75,000 in 2007 alone, their haunted attraction has become one of the better-known, most popular haunts in the American southeast - even pulling in customers from nearby states.
The Attractions
The chicken house is gutted and refashioned as a twisting macabre display that covers over 400-square-feet. And yes, there are chickens, but all sorts of other critters have joined them as well, including live snakes, scorpions, and spiders. These common phobias are on full display throughout the house that also resurrects the graphic scenes from movies past. While what visitors can see is in the house scary enough, they might wish they were still there when they enter the maze that is near total darkness.
In 2007, the group even added a haunted hayride into the mix. The hayride tours 30 acres and features nine separate scenes. While the group promises that it delivers on the scares as well, they note that it is not as extreme as the terrors that await guests in the Haunted Chicken House.
