Haunted House of Moss Beach
Located in Moss Beach, California, this annual Halloween haunted attraction has become a local favorite and gained national acclaim. The Haunted House of Moss Beach is actually a home haunt, devised and created by Rob Tjader who transforms his large deck into a full-fledged haunted attraction every October. The tradition began in 1997 and has been going strong ever since.
The son of a decorator, Tjader took his passion for the Halloween season and started building various props and decorations and put them out in the public for everyone to enjoy. Tjader ended up getting a little bit of help in October of 2006 with the addition of his new wife Sophie. Though the couple was married on October 14, the Haunted House of Moss Beach was up and running for the season shortly thereafter with Sophie (in a witch costume of course) greeting guests as they were about to enter the attraction. The haunt closed its doors for the 2008 season following the birth of their daughter, but were back in form in 2009.
Haunted House of Moss Beach has proven to be so popular that it is not unusual to find long lines and up to a 45-minute wait towards the end of October. What is even more impressive is the fact that the haunt is completely free to guests. The haunt does feature donation boxes, but all proceeds are given to UNICEF. The community has even gotten into the fun with the local Big Creek Lumber even donating some of the construction materials in years past.
The Attraction
The haunt is composed of props, animatronics fueled by pneumatics, creepy sound effects and lighting, fog, twisted mazes, dark corridors, off-angle walls, and scary surprises that all emerged from the mind Tjader, who even handles his own construction. Along the way, guests might even encounter Tjader's own version of the infamous Blue Lady said to haunt nearby Moss Beach Distillery. Only two people are allowed in the Haunted House of Moss Beach at any given time and the self-guided tour can range between three to five minutes.
