The Horrible Death of Octavia Hatcher
Octavia Hatcher was the wife of businessman James Hatcher. The two only produced a single child, named Jacob, during their marraige. The child died in 1891, still in his infancy. Only a few months later Octavia herself fell ill, went into a coma and passed away. Her unembalmed body was interred in the Hatcher family plot.
Within days, other Pikesville townsfolk fell ill with the same symptoms as Octavia. The other townsfolk fell into death-like comas but revived. Horrified with the possibilities, James had his wife's grave immediately exhumed. Upon opening the coffin all who were present witnessed a gruesome sight. Octavia, her face contorted in a silent scream lay dead in the coffin. The lining of the coffin was ripped to shreds, as were the fingers of the dead woman who had desperately tried to free herself from her premature burial.
Octavia was reburied. Her grief-stricken husband, James, had an even bigger monument placed above the grave in her memory. The new monument featured a statue of Octavia. When James Hatcher, himself, finally died in 1939, it is said that he had a specially made coffin that would prevent him from being buried alive as well.
A variation on the legend of Octavia Hatcher have her giving birth to her son, Jacob, after her demise and the crying infant being found in the exhumed coffin. Another has her ghost turning her statue so that its back faced the town on the anniversary of her death. Both stories are fabrications. Though there are persistent claims that strange sounds can be heard from the cemetery at night and that the ghost of Octavia Hatcher roams the grounds. |
