Information
Sourtoe Cocktail
At the Sourdough Saloon in the Downtown Hotel of Dawson City there is a drink that will make the bravest man cringe. The strange tradition was established in 1973 when a man named Captain Dick Stevenson (AKA Captain River Rat) bought a cabin outside of Dawson City where he found the pickled remains of a human toe. One night he decided to impress his friends and dropped the toe into his drink and downed the drink. It was said that the following mantra was invented then that still continues to this day: "Do it fast or do it slow, but your lips must touch the toe." Since then, over 12,000 people have dared the feat and had their name added to the "Sourtoe Cocktail Club," complete with an official certificate. Though the rules initially declared that the toe had to be placed in a beer glass full of champagne, the rules have changed overtime so that any drink (alcoholic or not) will suffice.

Real human toes that were dehydrated and preserved in salt are used. Over time, eight different toes have been used and aside from the initial toe, donors contributed the rest. Of the original eight toes, two have been swallowed (the original toe was swallowed accidentally and another was swallowed by a baseball player who wrongfully assumed that you had to swallow the toe to join the club) and one disappeared during renovations at the hotel. Those interested in trying the drink get their choice of the five remaining toes, though the bar does not recommend swallowing them.
