Exploring The Cabinet
10-31-365: Halloween/Horror Lifestyle - By Tom G
As those of you who have directly visited Dark Destinations may have noticed, the travel guide is actually just one aspect of a larger Web site, TheCabinet.com. Originally founded in 1994, it is one the oldest Internet sites in existence dedicated to the horror genre. While Dark Destinations fits in on the Halloween-side of things, as well as the movie and literary locations, it is our firm belief that the history and mythology found in many of our destinations played an indirect role (if not directly in some cases) in influencing the genre today. That is why many of our locations feature a section dedicated to the location's influence on popular culture - with a heavy emphasis on the darker side of pop culture. As such, we explore the history, legends, and roots of the horror genre in its various mediums on the site and not just in movies.

The literature section has the works of Edgar Allan Poe, the Grimm Brothers and many other classic tales of horror. The movies section has the tongue-in-cheek survival guides for both villains and regular characters in horror films. The music section displays horror-related music on Rhapsody. There are also sections for television, theater and radio. Almost all of TheCabinet.com's departments contain a section for perusing or contributing famous (of infamous) quotes associated with it. Most sections also have discussion forums for fans to discuss horror in its many forms as well.

Pay a visit to TheCabinet.com and check it out!

Dark Destinations on Facebook
TheCabinet.com Blog - By TheCabinet
I'm happy to announce that our latest Facebook venture is now live - Dark Destinations! The new application is a companion piece of our existing Dark Destinations here on the site, but allows Facebook users to explore our compilation of mysterious and macabre locations. In addition, we also push out either the Dark Destination of the Day or a user's dark traveler map (that displays all the creepy little sideroads that they have visited) to their profile page. Users can link up their accounts here at TheCabinet and add or edit locations, images, comments, ratings and everything else offered here at the site. This new application will be dynamic and ideally take advantage of the social networking aspects of Facebook in the very near future, something that will also be added on here.

It is our hope that offering this extra feed into our content of Dark Destinations opens it up to a much wider audience and will only add to the popularity of the section. If you are interested in what its other incarnation looks like, please check it out!

TheCabinet now on Facebook!
TheCabinet.com Blog - By TheCabinet
I'm happy to announce that we have launched out first application on the social networking site, Facebook. To start things off, we have released Horror Quotes as a companion piece to the quote sections of this site. You can link your Cabinet account with your Facebook account to rate current quotes or add additional quotes from either site. As a bonus, we also push the Horror Quote of the Day (or a quote of your own choosing) to your Facebook profile page and you can share your favorite quotes with your Facebook friends. The new application even has a scoring table for the most active users and lets you browse the top rated quotes - Something we will probably add on to the site if it proves to be popular.

This represents our first application for Facebook, but we have bigger and better plans for even more in the very near future. I hope you will check it out and let us know what you think!

Introducing Dark Destinations
TheCabinet.com Blog - By TheCabinet
I am proud to announce the latest addition to TheCabinet.com - Dark Destinations.  This new section is a travel guide of sorts to various dark and macabre places around the world.  It is a mash-up with Google Maps technology, allowing us to pinpoint the various locations on the map and give you a bird's eye view of each destination.

I have been wanting to do something with the Google Maps API for some time and during the reconstruction of the site, I started looking into what uses I could find.  My brother pitched in and suggested that I map to all the "haunted houses" out there and provide all of the relevant information about each.  I loved the idea!  The only problem was that he was thinking "haunted houses" as in the Halloween theme attraction type and I was thinking of those that were really supposedly haunted.  When I discovered this, I quickly thought, "Why not include both?"  It sounded like fun, but also a bit of work, so I put that on the backburner as tried to complete the other things I had started.

Enter our very own Spinning Grave (AKA Tom).  Tom was a contributor to the site back in the days of drcasey.com and just happened to contact me about a month or so before I brought the site back from the dead.  He was interested in what I was up to and possibly contributing to the site.  He had been working tirelessly on a very similar listing of strange places to travel and suggested that I take a look.  Given that I had already been considering doing just that on the site, it made perfect sense to merge the ideas into one.  So after months of us both slaving away, and a few actual quick jaunts to particular locations myself, we are proud to finally unleash this thing on the world.  Let me just add my deep thanks to Tom and bloody freak for all their hard work!

You might ask - It is dark and macabre sites, sure... but what does this have to do with the horror genre?  Well, my response would be, "Plenty!"  As you can see from this site (and even more so from the days of The Cabinet of Dr. Casey), I've always been interested in all aspects of the genre.  One of the most fascinating things to me is how the very different mediums of horror tend to connect and intertwine over time.  You can see the same themes, stories, and/or legends play out in the form of movies, literature, music, or whatever.  And a good amount of these stories and legends have an actual basis in reality and physical locations.  By exploring these sites, we are actually getting to the root of just what makes this genre tick.  In fact, I am going to be covering specific destinations this week on my Tracks of the Day blog, when I explore songs based on these sites and the history behind it and what influence it had on the music.

Of course, there is always the thrill factor as well.  One of the allures of the horror genre is that it will take you on a ride of emotions and into the darkest recesses of our collective minds.  Well, the good stuff at least.  There is a similar allure to actually visiting some of these infamous sites as well.  Would you rather sit down and watch a horror film or stay the night in a haunted hotel?  Tough choice for me and I've done both plenty of times and I'll get into that as well.  In fact, I am going to start a new blog that is dedicated to these strange destinations, as well as the world of the paranormal and the belief and skepticism that come with it.  We have plenty of ground to cover.

In the meantime, take a look at Dark Destinations (located under the new "General" tab up top) and explore the stories and legends behind each location.  The section is fully dynamic so that you can even add your own destination and/or edit an existing one if you feel the need.  In addition, you can send your photos from these sites, any stories from your travels, or just simply rate and comment on the existing stuff.  We have only really scratched the surface of the locations out there and will continue to work to bring you the best coverage we can of them.
