Blue Oyster Cult - Joan Crawford
Listen to Joan Crawford on Rhapsody
What better way to kick off a week of horror tracks than with Mommie Dearest herself. Joan Crawford was part of the 1981 Blue Oyster Cult album, Fire of Unknown Origin and appears to have a little fun with the 1978 novel Mommie Dearest by Christina Crawford. The non-fiction novel by the daughter of the famous actress portrays Joan Crawford to be an abusive and cruel alcoholic to her foster children. Since Crawford died in 1977, Blue Oyster Cult decided to raise her from the grave in a song, so she could get enact her revenge.
Blue Oyster Cult is just one of those bands that are hard not to love. Their horror tunes might be somewhat funny or morbidly devastating, but they have stuck to their roots and are still kicking out some classic horror tunes to this day. Hell, they even have author John Shirley writing some of their lyrics! We first visited them back with the first entry in the Track of the Day with Harvest Moon, which is a tad more serious than this song.
Joan Crawford starts out with a little classical sounding piano that has an ominous nature of things to come. When the lyrics kick in, we know we are in trouble.
Junkies down in Brooklyn are going crazy
They're laughing just like hungry dogs in the street
Policemen are hiding behind the skirts of little girls
Their eyes have turned the color of frozen meat
I don't know why but eyes turning the color of frozen meat gets me. Not exactly the prettiest of images to go through the head. So what if Joan Crawford is generally comical in nature. It also is a lot of fun. By the time the song gets to the whispers of “Christina... Mommy's home”, I always have the same reaction - Man, this is messed up. And in the end, isn't that all we can ask for?
